    How to Calculate Zakat

A comprehensive step-by-step guide to calculating your Zakat obligation with current 2026 Nisab thresholds.

    Rate

    2.5% of net wealth

    Nisab (Gold)

    87.48g / 3 oz

    Nisab (Silver)

    612.36g / 21.5 oz

    Type

    Obligatory (Fard)

    What is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and is obligatory for every Muslim who meets the Nisab threshold. The word "Zakat" means "purification" and "growth" – paying Zakat purifies your wealth and allows it to grow in blessings.

Allah says in the Quran: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase." (Quran 9:103)

    1Calculate Your Total Assets

Add up all your zakatable assets:

Cash in hand and bank accounts
    Gold and silver (jewelry included)
    Stocks, shares, and investments
    Business inventory and goods
    Rental income received
Money owed to you (expected to be repaid)
    Cryptocurrency holdings
    Retirement accounts (some scholars)

    2Subtract Your Liabilities

    Deduct debts and obligations:

    Outstanding loans and mortgages
    Credit card balances
    Bills due within the year
    Money owed to others

    3Check the Nisab Threshold

Nisab is the minimum wealth required for Zakat to be obligatory. You can use either:

    Gold Nisab

    87.48g

    Approximately 3 oz of gold

    Silver Nisab

    612.36g

    Approximately 21.5 oz of silver

Note: Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab as it is lower, ensuring more people can give and more recipients benefit.

4Calculate 2.5% of Your Net Wealth

If your net assets exceed the Nisab threshold, calculate 2.5%:

    Zakat Formula:

    (Total Assets - Liabilities) × 0.025 = Zakat Due

Example: If your net zakatable wealth is $50,000, your Zakat would be $50,000 × 0.025 = $1,250

    What is NOT Zakatable?

    • Your primary residence
    • Personal vehicle(s)
    • Household furniture and items
    • Personal clothing and jewelry worn
    • Tools of trade / business equipment
    • Personal debts unlikely to be repaid

    Zakat on Gold & Silver

Gold and silver are always zakatable, whether held as jewelry, coins, or bars. Calculate the market value of your gold and silver and include it in your total assets.

    Gold

Zakatable if you own 87.48g or more

    Silver

Zakatable if you own 612.36g or more
