Understanding Qurbani
Qurbani (also known as Udhiyah) is the Islamic practice of sacrificing an animal during Eid al-Adha. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) ultimate act of obedience when Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS).
Allah, in His mercy, replaced Ismail with a ram at the last moment. This act of submission is remembered every year during the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah, coinciding with the Hajj pilgrimage.
Who Must Give Qurbani?
According to the Hanafi school, Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) for every Muslim who:
Has reached puberty (baligh)
Is of sound mind (aaqil)
Possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold (approximately $5,000-6,000)
Is not a traveler (according to some scholars)
Other schools consider it Sunnah Mu'akkadah (emphasized Sunnah), meaning it is highly recommended but not strictly obligatory.
When is Qurbani Performed?
Qurbani can only be performed during the designated days of Eid al-Adha:
- 10th Dhul Hijjah (Day of Eid) – after Eid prayer
- 11th Dhul Hijjah
- 12th Dhul Hijjah
- 13th Dhul Hijjah (before sunset)
Any sacrifice performed outside these days is not considered Qurbani, though it can still be given as Sadaqah (charity).
