Understanding Waqf
Waqf (plural: Awqaf) is an Islamic endowment where a person dedicates assets for charitable purposes permanently. Unlike regular charity where the gift is consumed, Waqf preserves the original asset (the principal) while only the income or benefits generated are used for the designated purpose.
The concept of Waqf dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). When the companion Umar (RA) acquired valuable land in Khaybar, the Prophet advised him: "If you wish, you can hold the property as Waqf and give its produce as charity." (Bukhari)
This powerful concept has built some of the most enduring institutions in Islamic history, including Al-Azhar University (over 1,000 years old), countless mosques, hospitals, and schools that continue to serve communities today.
How Waqf Works
Donor Creates Waqf
Assets are donated and designated for specific charitable purposes
Principal is Preserved
The original asset is invested or held, never consumed
Income Benefits Charity
Returns generated fund the charitable cause indefinitely
Types of Waqf
Waqf for Religious Purposes
Mosques, Islamic schools, Quran printing, religious education, and supporting scholars.
Waqf for Philanthropic Purposes
Hospitals, orphanages, water wells, feeding programs, and poverty alleviation.
Family Waqf
Benefits specific family members first, then reverts to public benefit after.
What Can Be Given as Waqf?
Real estate (land, buildings, apartments)
Cash that is invested to generate returns
Water wells and infrastructure

Modern Waqf: Cash Waqf
While traditional Waqf involved real estate, modern Islamic finance has introduced Cash Waqf. Multiple donors contribute smaller amounts that are pooled, invested, and the returns are used for charitable purposes. This allows anyone to participate in Waqf, not just the wealthy.
